October Highlights and What’s Ahead for November

Last Updated 10/31/2025

October was a busy and rewarding month for the Monticello Parks and Recreation Department.  Staff took part in several learning and networking opportunities that will help strengthen future projects and programs.

Team members attended the Bike and Trail Summit in Cedar Falls, returning with new ideas and valuable connections to assist in planning the upcoming Monticello Bike Park.  Staff also participated in the IPRA Fall Workshop in Ankeny, gathering ideas to enhance local recreation opportunities.  The department presented to the Monticello Rotary Club, something the team enjoys doing a few times each year.  In addition, participation in the IPRA Leadership Institute continued, and staff attended the Camp Courageous CEO announcement, discussing possible future partnerships that could benefit both organizations.

We also enjoyed a successful partnership with the Monticello Public Library in bringing a Haunted Story Walk to the park — a fun and festive event that drew many families. And for those looking to stay active indoors, our Learning to Line Dance program was a big hit, with participants having a blast learning new steps together.

Looking ahead to November, several community volunteer opportunities and programs are on the calendar.  Following a successful Holiday on 1st work night with 20 volunteers, staff will be hanging more lights on November 6th–7th (times TBD).  A Bike Park Clean-Up Day is scheduled for November 9th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the next Holiday on 1st planning meeting will be held November 13th.

Holiday on 1st planning continues to be a major focus, with marketing, decorations, and activity coordination ramping up for what is expected to be the biggest year yet.

Program-wise, 3rd–6th Grade Girls Basketball is underway and will continue through mid-December.  The 1st/2nd Grade Basketball Training Camp begins Monday, followed by a No-School Day Dodgeball Tournament on November 7th.  The department’s first-ever Nerf Night will be held at the Berndes Center on November 21st.  PreK–K Parent/Child Basketball begins November 29th and registration for 3rd–6th Grade Boys Basketball closes December 5th.

For adults, Co-Ed Volleyball kicks off this Sunday.  Coffee & Cards will be held on the morning of November 11th and Self-Defense Classes are scheduled for November 10th and 17th at 9 a.m.  The Cruises and Tours Worldwide group will also host a California Trip presentation on November 12th at 6 p.m. for those interested in learning more.

It’s been a productive and inspiring fall and the team is excited to carry that momentum into the holiday season.  If you’d like to lend a hand with volunteer efforts, don’t hesitate to reach out to our staff at 319-465-6640.
