Youth Sports Philosophy
All Monticello Parks and Recreation youth sports programs are designed and administered so that every child, regardless of their abilities, has an opportunity to have a positive youth sports experience from their participation. The coaches, the parents, and the players play critical roles in contributing and supporting this philosophy.
· The coaches are directly responsible for instilling values, and good sportsmanship, developing and refining sports skills, and sharing their knowledge of the game.
· The parents play a role both on and off the field. On the field, they support and entrust the coaches with their children, offer a strong and positive interaction with the team, and “Honor the Game” while spectating. Off the field, parents continue their support by developing their children’s skills and love of the game outside of team practices while continuing to stress the need to “Honor the Game”.
· The players are challenged to keep their focus on fun, good sportsmanship, Honoring the Game, and to continue to develop and refine their sports skills outside of team practices.
We have provided an explanation of our philosophy of youth sports so that you can better understand our goals and help us to achieve them.
HONOR THE GAME
“Honoring the Game” is a Positive Coaching Alliance principle about sportsmanship encouraging leaders, coaches, parents, and athletes to respect all aspects of their sport. The ROOTS of Honoring the Game is an acronym that stands for better respecting: Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates and Self.
Rules
The rules of a sport have been developed and modified for a reason. Rules keep the game fair, and they also keep athletes safe. Don’t try to work against the rules or bend them; respect the role they play in your sport.
Opponents
As you want respect, give respect to your opponents. Show good sportsmanship at all times.
Officials
Officials are doing the best they can to enforce the rules and maintain a safe environment for play. They are people too, doing the best they can, and there is never an excuse for disrespecting officials.
Teammates
Make your teammates proud by doing the best you can (on and off the field) and by supporting them in all their efforts.
Self
Finally, and most importantly, you have to respect yourself in order to uphold an honorable approach to sports. Set high standards and live up to them.
INCLEMENT WEATHER
Inclement weather is defined as rain, snow, ice, wind, lightning, and/or severe conditions (tornado, thunderstorm watch/warnings) that compromise the safety of the participants, staff, volunteers and/or the condition of the facility. In the event of inclement weather, the Monticello Recreation & Parks Department recommends patrons at outdoor recreation areas find shelter and wait at least 30 minutes or longer prior to resuming safe, normal activities as deemed advisable by a Public Safety or National Weather Service Advisory. For both indoor and outdoor activities, the decision to cancel/reschedule events will be up to the staff’s discretion. If the Monticello Community School District cancels, delays, or reschedules school or events, it does not automatically affect our programming.
When the following weather conditions exist, Monticello Parks and Recreation may (at their discretion) cancel, postpone, or reschedule any indoor or outdoor department-organized recreational activity.
A. Cold Weather

B. Icy or Sleety Weather Conditions
