Reflecting on Monticello’s 2016 Heart & Soul Initiative: Recreation as a Driving Force
Reflecting on Monticello’s Heart & Soul: Recreation as a Driving Force
In 2016, the Monticello Heart & Soul initiative embarked on a journey to uncover what truly matters to our community. Through extensive engagement, five core values emerged: local business, recreation, small-town feel, customer service, and faith/education/cultural opportunities. These values became the foundation for community-driven priorities, setting the stage for transformational work.
Among the identified priorities were five key ideas: promoting community celebrations, improving school facilities, welcoming newcomers, establishing trails, and supporting business ventures. Each of these initiatives resonated deeply with the values of our town, and the work that followed reflects how Monticello continues to thrive when guided by its collective vision.
The Value of Recreation
Recreation was a standout value in 2016 and has been echoed time and again—most recently in the 2022 Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Recreation isn’t just about sports or activities; it’s about creating spaces and opportunities for connection, health, and growth. In Monticello, the focus on recreation has been a catalyst for achieving progress across the broader Heart & Soul goals.
Here are some highlights:
- Trail Expansion: Trails are a backbone of recreation and connection. The paving of the Willow Trail and the upcoming Highway 151 trail extension represent major strides. Soon, Monticello will boast a two-mile corridor of new trail connecting neighborhoods, parks, and our Main Street district—a testament to our commitment to accessibility and active living.
- Youth Programming: Expanding youth programs has provided more opportunities for kids to explore, play, and grow. This investment not only supports recreation but also strengthens community ties by giving families shared experiences.
- Inclusive Recreation Spaces: The Austin Smith Inclusive Playground has been a game-changer, offering a space where everyone, regardless of ability, can play together. It’s a shining example of how recreation can reflect and reinforce our values of inclusivity and community.
- New Developments: We’re excited to move forward with a bike park, which will bring even more recreational opportunities for people of all ages. Beyond its local benefits, it has the potential to attract visitors, supporting our business community and showcasing Monticello as a destination.
Recreation Builds Community
The progress we’ve made on recreation has ripple effects. It supports community celebrations by providing venues and activities that bring people together. It strengthens our schools by aligning with their role as hubs for activities and events. It makes Monticello more welcoming to newcomers by offering amenities that appeal to individuals and families alike. And by attracting tourism, it helps sustain and grow our local businesses.
Looking Ahead
While we’re proud of what’s been achieved, this is just the beginning. The momentum we’ve built since 2016 serves as a reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together. Looking ahead, we have ambitious goals to expand adult and inclusive programming, enhance family-friendly events, and create even more opportunities for people to connect and thrive.
Guided by our shared values and priorities, we look forward to continuing to make Monticello a place where people can EXPERIENCE MORE. Let’s keep building, dreaming, and connecting—because the best is yet to come.
